Tunado

Short introduction

TUNADO (The Uganda National Apiculture Development Organization) is a national member-based beekeepers apex body recognized by government and mandated by members and stakeholders to coordinate all apiculture value chain actors in Uganda. TUNADO is legally incorporated with the registrar of companies as a company limited by guarantee (Certificate No. 62239). TUNADO collaborates widely to develop the apiculture sector in Uganda and has worked closely with government through the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF) and several development partners.

Our trackrecord

TUNADO has been implementing projects in West-Nile for long and because of projects such as the Oxfam-Irish aid funded Bee better project that ran from 2017 to 2022, the Woord en daad funded Bee a Champion 1 and Bee a Champion 2 projects, beekeeping activities have been implemented for both refugees and host communities in refugee settlements especially Invempi refugee settlement. During these projects, TUNADO worked with refugees and host communities and trained beekeepers in hive making, honey processing, apiary establishment and management as well as value addition to create products such as beeswax jelly, beeswax candles and beeswax shoe polish.

Furthermore, another example of our work with refugees was with LM international on food security in the Rhino camp where TUNADO conducted beekeeping trainings for refugees using the bonga- groups.

Our work in West Nile has also resulted in the strengthening of existing companies which have eventually metamorphosed into Rural Transformation Centers (RTCs)

TUNADO therefore welcomes the LEAD project as an avenue to contribute to the welfare of both refugees and host communities during the project period in Rhino camp refugee settlement.

Our role in LEAD Uganda

Among other roles, TUNADO’s contribution to the LEAD project will be:

  • To promote climate smart practices for increased food security and climate change mitigation and adaption e.g using agro-ecological block farming and beekeeping.
  • To provide tailored business development services to refugees and host communities in green value chains for job creation and business growth.
  • To strengthen capacity of refugees and host communities to advocate for social cohesion and participate in inclusive policy decision-making processes.

Message from Programmes Manager. Working with purpose and passion to respond to humanitarian and development needs of population affected by crisis is a calling for us as CECI because we are them. The LEAD project at its commencement has showcased true localization by empowering CECI as a Refugee Led Organization. The project will provide opportunities for building resilient households of Refugees and Host in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement-Yumbe District.
“Transforming ideas into enterprises, and enterprises into impact — We empower innovators to build sustainable businesses, create jobs, and drive industrial growth that shapes the future.”
“The LEAD project is a powerful testament to what locally-led collaboration can achieve. Co-created by Woord en Daad along with Ugandan grassroots organizations, local governments, and refugee-serving institutions, it reflects a shared vision to unlock dignified work and economic resilience for young people in refugee and host communities. What makes LEAD unique is not just its inclusive design, but its commitment to scale even at the on-set, show-casing the abilities of local actors and strengthening their capacities to deliver high-impact models with a potential for replication across Uganda and beyond.” Patrick Jude Mugisha, Executive Director – IFRAD
