In a country where over 70% of the population is under 30, young people are both the future and the present. On 29 August 2025, Uganda’s youth will take a significant step forward in shaping their country’s future with the official launch of the National Youth Manifesto (NYM) 2026–2031.
The NYM is the product of a broad, youth-led consultation process carried out across all regions of Uganda. It captures the priorities of in-school and out-of-school youth, those in rural and urban areas, young women and men, and youth living with disabilities. It reflects both lived experience and strategic foresight.
At its core, the NYM is more than a document; it’s a political and policy framework that calls on leaders to act. With five bold proposals, ranging from investing in human capital and scaling up green jobs to accelerating digital access and accountability, the manifesto offers a clear, evidence-based roadmap.
Why it matters
The NYM launch comes at a crucial moment as Uganda prepares for its 2025/26 elections. The event will serve as a formal presentation of youth demands to political parties, government bodies, civil society, and the private sector. It’s also a moment to strengthen accountability, reminding decision-makers that the priorities of young people are not optional; they are essential to Uganda’s sustainable development.
What the youth are asking for
From universal health coverage and skills training to youth-led enterprises and anti-corruption reforms, the five “Big Asks” of the NYM align with national plans like Vision 2040 and NDP IV, as well as global frameworks such as the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The role of LEAD Uganda
While the NYM is not directly part of the LEAD programme, we share common ground: in our efforts to strengthen youth agency, amplify unheard voices, and create opportunities for dignified livelihoods. Through its focus on localisation and inclusive governance, LEAD Uganda supports the same principles that underpin the manifesto.
Looking head
The launch of the National Youth Manifesto is an invitation for policymakers, funders, and all Ugandans to walk alongside a generation that is ready to lead. At Woord en Daad, we are proud to stand with these young changemakers, and we look forward to seeing how this vision unfolds in the years ahead.
