How we do it

How we do it in five steps

Here’s how we make it happen

we’re dedicated to creating sustainable change by empowering local communities, particularly refugees and host populations, through a holistic and collaborative approach. Each step of our process is designed to strengthen capacity, provide financial empowerment, foster participation, and drive impactful change that’s rooted in local needs. Here’s how we do it:

Capacity strengthening

Real change begins with resilient, skilled communities. We focus on equipping individuals and local organisations to support each other through peer-to-peer training, tailored mentorship, and support. From vocational and leadership training to strengthening organisational capacity, we empower local leaders to build thriving communities. By investing in local expertise, we create a strong foundation for lasting impact.

Training and skills development: Our training programs focus on equipping local leaders and organisations with the technical skills they need to make their initiatives sustainable and impactful.

Organisational support: We work side-by-side with our partners, enhancing their financial and operational capacities so they can confidently move forward in their mission.

Direct financing

Our model ensures that resources reach those who know their communities best. Through direct financial support, we empower local partners to lead projects, allocate funds effectively, and address specific needs. This approach builds trust, encourages transparency, and allows local leaders to make decisions that align with community priorities.

Local ownership: Our funding model empowers in-country partners to take the lead in implementing projects, giving them control over how resources are utilised.

Transparency and accountability: We work closely with local partners to ensure funds are used responsibly, with clear reporting structures and continuous monitoring.

Meaningful participation

Every project is shaped by the people it’s designed to serve. Refugees and host communities are involved in every stage, from design to implementation, ensuring each initiative reflects their insights and lived experiences. Through this inclusive process, our strategies become not only effective but deeply relevant.

Policy advocacy: We work with local governments, civil society organisations, and community leaders to advocate for inclusive policies that address the needs of refugees and host communities.

Community engagement: Refugees and host populations participate actively in project planning, implementation, and evaluation. Their insights and lived experiences are invaluable in shaping strategies that truly make a difference.

Collaborative co-creation

Collaboration drives everything we do. Using tools like the System Change Canvas, we bring together local partners, civil society organisations, refugee-led initiatives, women’s rights groups, government representatives and community leaders to analyze challenges and co-create solutions. This collaborative approach allows us to build inclusive, accountable frameworks that directly address systemic challenges and fit the local context.

Innovation and flexibility

Communities are dynamic, and so are we. By integrating digital tools, market access strategies, and climate-resilient practices, we adapt to evolving needs. Our innovative solutions ensure that we not only address immediate challenges but also foster sustainable livelihoods and resilience for the long term.
